What is the fine line that separates a supportive fan from a sick Stan?

The question has been raised recently by one of my contacts and I think that it would be interesting to respond to it in detail.
I already know that this article will raise some controversy, but I don’t care. I am eventually getting used to it.
I myself have often been misquoted and misinterpreted as a huge and supportive Eminem fan and people have called me names without even knowing me. Some of you have called me « obsessed ». Let me tell you that I don’t care about what you think.
It is a matter of fact that I am a supportive fan and that I have explored Eminem’s life and music in depth as a biographer and a music journalist.
Marshall Mathers has actually changed my life through his music and attitude and I will always be grateful to him for that.
I am not gonna justify my passion for his music today. I love his music and if you have a problem with my musical taste, there is nothing I can do for you.
People who read my blog on a regular basis also know that I am not only about Eminem. I also define myself as a huge fan of the Detroit underground scene and as a hip hop fan in general.
I do listen to many different mainstream artists such as Cypress Hill, Ice T, Ice Cube , Nas etc…
Besides being a rap music lover, I am also a black music lover. I happen to enjoy soul music and blues in particular.
I am all about the music, as long as it pleases my ears. I don’t despise any musical genre. Like Detroit underground artist Odell Perry aka P Dog, I am and will stay open minded towards the music in general. If you listen to rap music carefully, you will also notice that many artists such as Xzibit and Ice Cube have found some inspiration in classical music.
You’d better think twice before calling me a « Stan ». My articles have been a positive contribution to your knowledge, they have explored Eminem’s oeuvre ad human side as well. Please remember that I never acted crazy nor did I state anything insane about Marshall Mathers.
He is somebody that I respect too much to act that way anyway.
However, I have seen so many crazy and sick behaviors around me. I have seen girls who stated that they were « cyber married » to Eminem, some others who argued that he was « theirs » and that they would marry him. So many « biggest fans » or should I say « biggest Stans » have crossed my road too.
I have seen a 43 year old woman make a total fool of herself recently- because of Eminem.
Some people have harassed me in order to get Eminem’s email and personal address and some others have even requested Kim or Debbie’s address. To the freaks who addressed me such crazy demands, let me tell you what: even if I had this personal info, I would never ever give it out.
So what is the difference between a supportive fan and a crazy fan?
I do consider that a respectful fan ought to respect Marshall Mathers as a person and not to invade his privacy. As I already stated it, crazy behaviors à la Stan make his life a living hell.
Eminem might be a public person, but he doesn’t owe you any explanation about his private matters and no, he is not « yours ». He is not your object nor is he your property. He makes some music for you and despite the fact he often gets personal in his tracks, he owes you no explanation about his relationship with Kim, for instance. So it is useless and ridiculous to insult a woman like Kim (yes, you don’t know her, should I repeat it once again?) and to consider her as your personal rival.
Behaviors begin to become totally sick when a fan gets crazy when Eminem doesn’t act the way he or she wanted to. When a fan becomes self destructive over Eminem and starts chasing him as he would hunt an animal, this nut fan certainly needs a therapy.
Of course, I would like to meet Eminem. However, never without his consent. Never if the price to pay is to become some mad stalker waiting at his door night and day.
When Eminem’s cell phone number spread on the net due to the hack of Paris Hilton’s address book, some people of my entourage wondered why I didn’t call. It is quite obvious, though: I’d never invade Eminem’s privacy and call him without being invited to.
It is high time some nutcases realized that Marshall Mathers has a private life too.
Not only do crazy fans give Eminem a bad name, but they also endanger their mental health. Lose yourself in the music, but don’t become some pathetic little loser over Eminem.

How We Roll A SOL/Trick Trick collaboration/ song review

Rating: 3.75 stars
You’re fond of gangsta tracks? Then the Sol-Trick Trick collaboration is exactly what you need. Both creeping through the streets of 7 Mile, the Detroit thugs are taking over.
Rapid drum beats and keyboard sounds introduce the hood anthem.
Sol is a Mexican villain straight out of Southwest Detroit. He intelligently combines his hot suave Mexican flavor with Trick Trick’s raw voice and rough style. Both associates are ready to get down in the streets and to handle their illegal business. You gotta respect both original gangstas who rep the D with confidence, marrying two unique styles of their own…
You’d better fear both street hustlers who carry guns and who handle their business with confidence.
How We Roll reminds me a little bit of Xzibit’s Symphony In X Major, probably because it carries the mind of two offensive street soldiers.
Musically, this track is pure fire. Lyrically, the track has been well handled. Maybe beats and instruments could be improved for a little part.
Globally, the track is an interesting contrast of two different Detroit flavors. You should definitely check it out on Sol’s my space account.

Eminem gets discharged from rehab

Nearing the end of the Anger Management Tour 3 that began early on this summer, Eminem made a decision to check into a drug rehabilitation center near Detroit. Apparently, the rapper had issues managing another element: sleep medication.
After roughly three weeks in the rehabilitation center and an additional three weeks serviced through the outpatient program, Mr. Marshall Mathers has completed his cycle for patients at-risk of drug abuse. A spokesman for Interscope Records initially stated that “exhaustion and other medical issues were the causation for Mathers entering the center.
Word has also been aired that Dr. Dre was seen entering Detroit to meet Eminem at the studio. They are expected to be continuing work toward the upcoming Eminem release, Curtain Call, which will serve as a ‘greatest hits’ record. The project is anticipated to hit store shelves in early December amidst the holiday season.
Curtain Call has not yet been chiseled down to a specific playlist; However, expected selections include “My Name Is,â€? “Stan,â€? “The Way I Amâ€? and “Lose Yourselfâ€? amongst others. This ‘greatest hits’ album is also expected to generate enough sales to push Eminem over 30 million total albums sold in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures

Happy Birthday Eminem!

Em, if you ever read this post, those are my birthday wishes addressed to you. I know that you have been through a lot those last months and that you are probably overworked.
I want you to know that I will always support you, no matter what kind of decision you will take about your career.
I sincerely hope that this birthday will be a happy and good one.
I wish you a happy birthday in my name and in the name of all your true fans all over the world.
This freestyle I have written is my little present for you.
Wishing you all the best and thanks for changing my life positively the way you did.

Freestyle (dedicated to Marshall Mathers III, for his 33th birthday)
Haven’t written a freestyle for a while
(Gotta get something out of my chest, haters, you are now under arrest!)
I feel like it’s rhyme time, let me perfect my crime,
Time to battle against those Stans with no balls
Sending some desperate SOS calls
And those crazy chicks who act like they had dicks,
Full of frustration about your recent show cancellation…
I bet you people need a clear translation
Against the hateful, I’m gonna raise hell and yell
It’s scary: some dickheads put Marshall so much on a pedestal
That they sent him directly to the hospital
Yes, Em cancelled a show, and still he is the man,
Can’t you see that he’s only human?
Still, he could smash your brain in a freestyle,
Break your disdain and make you look insane!
Showing that your complaint ain’t worthwhile, allright Kyle?
There’s no logical reason for your anger to grow!
Damn, don’t claim to be a fan
You’re just some whining gay man
Dissing instead of being grateful
Image of the fateful and the hateful
Marshall, you have been sick,
Lots of people wish you to get well very quick,
And maybe to make another great song with Trick Trick,
Our only query is for you a fast recovery,
Take some time for your loved ones,
We all wish for your sickness to go away,
Today is a special day, guess what I’d like to say in first place:
« Man, thank you and happy birthday , have a wonderful day! »

Michigan emcee The Disciple: deep, spiritual, political and realistic

The Disciple aka Kevin Sheridan is an emcee who hails from Deaborn Heights, Michigan. His music has some real criticism of the contemporary society to offer to the listener.
Kevin Sheridan was born in 1981.
What motivates Kevin Sheridan aka The Disciple to write his music?
« My reason for music and life in general, is to impact society and the world in a positive way in the short time that I have on this earth. Many thing fuel my creative process, including, poverty in America, America in general, the high cost of colllege tuition, economic slavery, the lack of some sort of medical aid for all the people of not only America, but the world. I am against racism, police brutality, racial discrimination. »
(Kevin Sheridan)
It is quite clear that The Disciple has something to say and that he goes deep into social and political subjects.
The Disciple feels close to the underprivileged of this world. Hide My Feelings is dedicated to all the people who are going through hard times and who feel depressed. Very well handled lyrically, the song is really worth your interest. Soft keyboard sounds and rhythmic beats combined with the Disciple’s deep and sensitive voice give this track a very nostalgic note. Wind driven tears drop in form of notes like Autumn rain while the Disciple pours a heart full of insecurities and loneliness consumed by a permanent sorrow. This beautiful song expresses the pain of a man in spiritual search who is trying to escape from a hopeless world.
The Disciple also offers some real criticism about America and the American government’s politics and some real insight about the society in which we live in.
His influences
Artists who have influenced the Disciple: NWA, Ice Cube, Eminem, the Beatles and many more…
The Disciple’s debut album The Life Journey Of A Man is due to release in early 2006.
Hopefully I increased your curiosity about the Disciple. Check him out here.

A musical enigma and a man with attitude: Detroit emcee V Sinizter

An underground rapper from Saginaw, Michigan, recently attracted my attention. His name? V Sinizter aka Venus J. Billingsley.
The young and talented rapper is a man of many hats: songwriter, arranger, producer, engineer, performer at the same time. V Sinizter has faith in his genuine artistic value and he speaks with confidence about his future success:
« I CAN’T LOSE!!! I’m on a quest to Atlantis for platinum plaques, because now’s the time; I CAN’T STOP!!! Till I reach the top and show the world how a young star shines; I WON’T LOSE!!! I spent too many years hustlin’ hard to win, stayin’ on the grind; I WON’T STOP!!! Till I reach the stars and top the charts – the VICTORY IS MINE!!! » (Venus J. Billingsley)
His pictures reflect V Sinizter’s attitude and determination. Let me tell you that V Sinizter’s self confidence is fully justified: when he touches the mic, the gifted emcee transforms his words into gold. Like a five stars general assembling his army and encouraging his soldiers, V Sinizter claims victory with confidence and attitude. The born soldier can’t stop, he won’t lose, he won’t stop, because the victory he envisions is already his. Those are exactly the words that are expressed in V Sinizter’s song, Victory Road. Victory Road is a song that I would rate as inspirational for any person who fights for his/her dreams to come true.
No wonder he is so much into his art: V Sinizter comes from a family of musicians. His mom, Stephanie Smith is a Rhythm and Blues singer. His older brother, Stephan Herd raps under the nickbame Mack Tha Jack’a. Venus’ cousins are Curtis Mayfield and gospel vocalist Leatha Warfield.
Another of his cousins is actor Julian Mayfield.
V Sinizter has opened shows for artists like Esham, Bizzy Bone, Ludacris and MC Breed.
In 2002, V Sinizter released his first solo album, Morning Star: Sins Of An Angel. The following year,Venus J. Billingsley was signed to Psychopathic Records. His next release was Ep Hunting Season. The CD experienced some technical difficulties and V Sinizter had to reinvest his money in buying some higher performance computer equipment.
Back in 2004, with Morning Star: Soul Of The Beast, V Sinizter is now ready to conquer the world with a victory that is already his.
In 2005, V Sinizter started acting in a movie called Detroit Hoopz where he plays the role of a Detroit undercover cop. The movie is due to release in late 2005.
Find out more about the enigmatic emcee V Sinizter actually is on his official website.
